Match the packaging to the product.
Choose pallets, cartons, crates, and protective materials appropriate for the product’s weight and sensitivity. Heavy, fragile, or irregular freight may require a packaging specialist. Stretch wrap alone is not a substitute for suitable restraint and protection.
Check the finished handling unit.
Inspect before requesting pickup. The finished dimensions and weight should match the information used for the quote.
- Use sound pallets suited to the load
- Keep freight within the pallet footprint where possible
- Secure cartons and protect vulnerable edges
- Mark handling restrictions clearly
- Keep labels visible and remove obsolete shipping labels
Plan for more than one handling event.
LTL freight may be transferred between trailers and terminals. Package for that handling environment, and disclose non-stackable or unusually shaped freight before booking. Labels communicate instructions but cannot guarantee a particular orientation through every handling event.
Keep a preparation record.
Take clear photos of the packaged shipment before pickup, including labels and visible condition. Record unit count and dimensions. For product-specific packaging requirements, obtain guidance from the manufacturer and transportation provider.
